A touching, funny tale (based on director Mills' real life experiences) has Oliver reflecting on his life after his father dies of cancer (which was preceded by the aged man coming out as being gay, a few years after the passing of his wife). This was however not a quiet coming out, but all the way, as he had to catch up on 75 years of denial. Inheriting his father's sweet dog and meeting a carefree French actress with issues of her own, this bitter-sweet journey of self-discovery is both beautiful and enlightening.

The role earned Christopher Plummer his first Oscar win.
